The painting is bigger but I couldn't fit it all on my scanner.
When I was little I was fascinated by the idea of the "stinking corpse flower", the titan arum plant. It has a giant single flower and smells like a rotting corpse. I liked the idea of the giant flower, and wanted to see one so I could find out what a rotting corspe actually did smell like. Then, when I was a little older, I realized I didn't need to travel to an exotic location and see this rare flower to find out- all I had to do was take the utensils to my EasyBake oven and walk down to the train tracks by the woods to dissect dead hobos. But sometimes I wonder exactly how similar the rotting transients and the exotic plant would smell. There are some of these plants at various botanical gardens in the US, but not in the state I live in now. Maybe some day I can plan a trip to see one.
one of those flowers opened a few days ago in my city, but I didn't know about it so I didn't go to see and smell it. oh well. This is reminding me very much of the book American Psycho.
In reference to the comment from ~goldenstrings, I also recommend the American Psycho movie. I have yet to read the book but I found the movie in the $5 bin at Wal-Mart.
I think I read about that kind of flower in a book when I was little and wanted to see it, too. Thanks for reminding me what it's called.
I like this painting quite a lot because it reminds me of some of the things I see when I close my eyes- specifically flowers growing out of corpses. It's beautiful how dead things turn into soil and fertilize the living.
I always appreciate how you can blend colors like that to create corpsey, rotten skin tones. She looks so happy!
