Illustration Friday's topic is "poem" so here is a poem inspired by the story of "Latawnya the Naughty Horse", an amusing anti-drug story I stumbled across tonight. If you haven't seen it you should Google it, it is amusing.
This is literally the first poem I have ever written, so be kind:

"I Had a Friend Who Died"

Part One
The air was slow and thick
the light was bright and red and strange
the grass on the ground was hard like splinters of wood
the rocks on the ground were soft like marshmallows
he didn't even know what marshmallows were
but they were squirming writhing squishing
like the insects under his skin
like the moving earth under his hooves.

Part Two
On the ground, the horse kicked and choked
foaming vomit ran out over his lips and in his eyes it rose
*high*
electric blue and a melancholy shade of fuchsia-gray
rising up to the clouds

like frothy butterflies

butterflies made from horse vomit.

Part Three
"He accidentally took an overdose and died," said Father horse.
"He died scared, hallucinating that his friends were wolves," said Father horse.
"His body swelled in the summer sun, stinking and turning black," said Father horse.
"The flies came," continued Father horse, "sometimes I still hear the buzzing of the flies in my dreams."
"The flies, the flies, the flies, the flies, the flies, the flies, in his eyes, the flies, the flies," said Father horse.

The End

I think this could be part of a much more effective anti-drug book. Even if they replaced only the illustrations in "Latawnya the Naughty Horse" with mine, or only the text, I think the end product would be something that was much better at scaring children away from drugs.

I'm leaving this one open for comments. But don't be too harsh, I scribbled out the picture and the poem tonight in less than an hour, what the hell do you want?

I finally got around to reading this and looking at the wonderful drawing.
really, your stories (and now poems) are fantastic! they never cease to put a smile on my face. such wit and creativity. I think this would be wonderful for children. and far more entertaining than the usual anti-drug things. I love this.
and now I must go google this anti-drug story you speak of.

omigolly, i haven't laughed so hard in a long time. thank you.

i love this from the author's bio:

The author would like to thank God. "Thank you, God."

And that poem thingy?

Using drugs will kill. So be for real.
Using drugs is not a good idea.
You can call me names and you can talk
about me too. I don't use drugs and
neither should you.

an f'ing riot. do you have this book? i love the picture of the horses smoking and drinking and found a high-res scan of it on somethingawful.com .

all that being said, this is gorgeousawful. plusfave.

Yay, the ability to leave a comment! Anyhoo, this is hilarious, and i do agree, it would be a more effective way to scare kids off drugs. Just show them the true negative effects! You gotta do something that'll disturb the kids against something for them to actually not want to do it. All this namby pamby child-care crap going on these days is only gonna make life tougher when they DO run into the truth.

I think I should put together a crazy anti-drug pamphlet and leave them at bus stops.
I always want to leave random stuff in odd places, but I imagine doing that only to have someone just throw it away without even looking at it.

Me, too. I've always wanted to leave pamphlets of my art and the cause of "fat girls are pretty" and all that ... and also there were times when i wanted to post this anti-christianity propaganda on church doors, hehe. Not anything stupid like "god sucks" but actual listings of hypocricies trying to expose the lies and all that. I've sorta grown out of that, but i still have urges sometimes, hehe.

I like those ideas. :)
But I doubt it would do any good with the religion thing. I've been reading "God is not Great, How Religion Poisons Everything" and it made me wonder what my religious relatives would think of it if they were to read it. And I can't help but think they wouldn't even consider anything said in the book, because of their 'faith'.

'The fat girls are pretty' thing could work to a certain degree, I think, because a lot of what people think of as beautiful has to do with what they are taught is beautiful. By putting out positive, sexy images of bigger woman for people to see, more people would consider that as beautiful.
